Why Does My Company Need DEF?
At the beginning of 2010, the EPA instituted tighter emissions standards for medium—and heavy-duty vehicles, requiring them to significantly reduce their engine emissions. The new regulations targeted nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter, which were produced in large quantities by diesel engines.
In response to these new requirements, truck manufacturers now incorporate Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems into their new diesel trucks. SCR systems work by injecting small amounts of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF)—a 2:1 mixture of deionized water and urea—into the vehicle exhaust system, where it rapidly evaporates and combines with the NOx in truck exhaust fumes to form harmless nitrogen and water.
